Ermenegildo Zegna Made to Measure heritage
Rooted in decades of tailoring expertise, Ermenegildo Zegna’s Made to Measure service emerged over 40 years ago. Along with its customers, it has never stopped evolving
E
rmenegildo Zegna was established in 1910 with the vision ‘to make the most beautiful and high quality fabrics in the world’. Over the 20th century, the company’s success and ambition led it to expand from fabric into tailoring and it was soon providing a full menswear range.

Along the way, the company would gradually become a vertically integrated fashion brand, closely managing every element in the supply chain, from sheep to stores.

Unusually for a menswear brand, Ermenegildo Zegna is completely vertically integrated, helping it overseee the highest quality: from the pasture the sheep graze on to the final buttonhole detail on a made to measure suit.

This, combined with its popularity as a fabric supplier to tailors, made establishing its own made-to-measure line a logical step. In 1972, in Novara, Northern Italy, it launched its first made-to-measure service.

It was aimed at customers seeking a bespoke sartorial service and allowed them to choose a model, fabric and cut of suit that professional tailors would then construct in couple of weeks. This grew into the Taglio Esclusivo service, first launched in 1987.

Taglio Esclusivo enabled a customer to have a garment made to suit his taste and build. The client chose the fabric, the model (sports or formal, single or double breasted) and personalised several details such as the pockets, number of buttons, vents and the cut of the trousers. Personalised preferences and measurements were passed to ‘master cutters’ and in a few weeks the unique garment was cut, worked, hand finished and pressed.

The history of made to Measure: Zegna Taglio Esclusivo
Zegna’s approach has changed, but the motives – excellence, precision, service – remain. Just as it was when it was first conceived, made to measure is an experience. An experience built around you. ... Read More

As demand grew over the 1990s and 2000s, the made-to-measure service – by now called Su Misura – required a bigger home and moved to a dedicated centre of excellence. It’s here that the measurements taken by specially trained Zegna tailors are sent, together with the unique specification for each garment. One large room is dedicated to the task of cutting up the 100 pieces that form a suit, a second room to assembling them. There are more than 40 stages to making a jacket and, along the way, each jacket will be worked on by almost 200 pairs of hands.

As men’s styles of dressing have changed, so has Zegna’s made-to-measure approach. It introduced customisable shoes with its made-to-measure footwear range in 2004. And responding to an increasing informality in the way men dress – and the demand for bespoke weekend wear – it developed a range of made-to-measure informal wear.
